Secretary

Lucy Mott

Newcastle Universities Student Scout and Guide Group

Who Am I

My name is Lucy and I am a final year Modern Languages student at Newcastle University. I have been a member of NUSSAGG for 4 years and part of Girlguiding for 15 years, being a Guides leader for the last 3.

I have taken on a number of roles in SSAGO over the years. I have spent 3 years on NUSSAGG committee as Welfare Officer, Guide Liaison (while on my year abroad) and currently President. You may also remember me from when I was let loose with the megaphone while being activities officer for SSAGOes to Space Rally!

I’m looking for a new SSAGO adventure as I graduate, step down from NUSSAGG committee this summer and begin teacher training and think I would really enjoy being on Team Pink!! I would love the opportunity to give back to an organisation that has given so much to me!

Why me

Over the years I have gained a lot of experience through being on NUSSAGG’s committee, dealing with all sorts of admin and battles against our SU. I helped to run two Freshers camps for the club that required lots of organisation skills alongside carrying out the day-to-day work needed for the club to run efficiently. I have grown to love all things admin and enjoy nothing more than writing a good email!

I have faced lots of challenges in my time as a Guides leader and have gained a lot of resilience when things are difficult. NUSSAGG has struggled in the past to develop with Girlguiding in the area, but I have worked resiliently to form what is now a strong relationship with ourselves and the county commissioner. I am not afraid to work hard and as someone with a plethora of commitments I have learnt to manage my time as efficiently as possible. I would therefore make sure to carry out my secretary responsibilities to the best of my ability.

Whilst on SSAGOes to Space Rally committee, I gained a greater understanding and appreciation of the behind the scenes work that SSAGO requires which I think equips me well to support event committees and complete the work required by the secretary. I already therefore have some experience with the SSAGO emailing system and the ability to work well in a team.

During my Modern Languages degree, I have massively developed my communication skills as through organising and taking my year abroad I had to be able to communicate and carry out tasks in not only English but Spanish and French too. Nothing prepares you for admin related work more than applying for a visa to work abroad! I am a very organised person and couldn’t think of a better use for my skills than organising SSAGO.

Plans for the role

-Keep Team Pink as organised as possible.

-Make sure resources like minutes are as accessible as possible for all.

-Keep emails as to the point as possible so people read them!

-Be present at events as much as possible and use my experience to support those running them.

-Have fun – make Team Pink appear as enjoyable as possible to encourage others to run in the future.
